Landscape is not always something that exists before our eyes.
Sometimes, it resides in memory; in a photograph taken on a quiet afternoon; in a street once passed through, a view from a window, the silhouette of a mountain, or the space between objects. As time passes, specific details gradually fade, and what remains is often not the original appearance of things, but an impression woven from light, color, and feeling. When light falls, it illuminates not only the world before us, but also the places where memory lingers.
For Julianne Lee, painting is a journey into the unknown. Each act of covering, layering, and reworking the canvas becomes a search for an inner landscape that has yet to be fully articulated. The symbols, lines, and fields of color that emerge reflect the artist’s deeper impulses of self-expression and emotional imagination, allowing her works to exist in a fluid and open space between the representational and the abstract.
This exhibition, Where the Light Falls, considers light as more than a natural phenomenon. Here, light becomes a moment of perception. It reveals, yet it also obscures. While illuminating the external world, it simultaneously reflects inner sensations and memories. As light falls, landscape ceases to be merely landscape, becoming instead a place where memory and imagination converge.
